Lot’s Wife Gig Guide: Edition 2

The Drones

Melbourne’s Forum Theatre will play host to arguably the most electrifying and loud Australian rock band next month: The Drones. In line for the release of their latest album I See Seaweed, released on March 1st, this proves the perfect opportunity to catch a live transmission of the band’s newest material, as well as older tunes from albums such as Gala Mill, Havilah, and The Miller’s Daughter. Despite the brilliance of Liddiard’s song writing and the band’s cohesion, catching this five-piece in person, preferably while wedged between some sweat drenched rockers and coated in a mix of body fluids and spilt/regurgitated beer, is a must. It is safe to say that their live performances add the final dimension to the aural and spiritual journey their aggressive ga- rage rock sends you on. Finally, at only $45.70 per ticket, you’d deserve to be shot if you missed this undoubtedly anarchic and mind blowing show. Tickets available via Ticketmaster.

When: Friday April 26th, at The Forum

Jimmy Cliff

Jimmy Cliff, the man behind popularising reggae music through worldwide hits such as ‘The Harder They Come’ and ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want’, will be performing at the Corner Hotel in Richmond later this month. As one of five artists to join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, and the only living recipient of a Jamaican Order of Merit for the Arts and Sciences, his show is guaranteed to draw a crowd. Whether you’re there to vaguely sing along to ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ because you know it from Gold 104’s repetitious playlists, or whether you’re a dreaded reggae lover, make sure to invest the $80.00, as you won’t be disappointed.

When: Wednesday March 27th, at The Corner

Flume w/Chet Faker

As part of his Infinity Prism Tour, Flume is gearing up for a performance in Melbourne. Originating from Sydney, the young beatmaker released his self-titled debut last year, which show- cased his love of synthesizers. Although his sound is primarily electronic, he does experiment with soul and hip-hop, often using chopped vocals to demonstrate this diversity. Chet Faker, winner of last year’s Australian Independent Records award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, will be joining Flume’s tour as a special guest. Faker, whose debut EP Thinking in Textures personified the glorious fusion of electronic beatmaking and soul, features on one of Flume’s singles, ‘Left alone’. The pair will make for a dynamic tour; experimental beat music incarnate. When: Thursday 2nd May, at Festival Hall

Local Natives

In support of the release of their second album, Hummingbird, Local Natives will be arriving on our shores in May. Hummingbird, released in January, serves as a reminder of the LA quartet’s or- chestral harmonies, dream-like melodies and subtle psychedelic distortions. Likened to Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend, Local Natives have created a signature indie-rock sound that, at times paradoxically demonstrates an interplay between heavy and mellow tones.

When: Saturday May 18th, at The Forum
