Although I usually get off on psychadelia and electronic distortion, it’s nice to sit back with a glass of red wine and listen to a beautifully orchestrated acoustic show. Performing at the Wesley Anne in Northcote, Larissa Agosti and her supporting band showcased her repertoire of unplugged, tranquil folk songs. In support of her second single ‘Boy’ off her debut LP The Travel Tree, Larissa, known by her stage name Gosti, delivered the most organic performance to the most intimate of crowds. The tiny space and crowd allowed Gosti to really connect with her audience – her ease and charisma making us feel like we were part of an exclusive friendship group.
Taking us through The Travel Tree was Gosti on vocals and guitar, a guy on French horn, a woman on cello and two acoustic guitarists who also harmonised with their leader. The cello was the perfect addition, providing an eerie orchestral sound that added a haunting quality to Gosti’s vocals. The French horn was played in a subtle manner; a wise decision, as it did not dominate over the rest of the instruments.
Halfway through the set, Gosti apologised for having an incessant cold. If she hadn’t mentioned it, we wouldn’t have known, as she sang with such purity and an unwavering pitch. Her voice was so organic and her vibrato was effortless. The acoustic arrangements were incredibly serene; a refreshing night of much needed stripped-back music.
