With lyrics like “I never knew pain like this / When everything dies,” Chan Marshall’s 9th album may not have the most optimistic start, but that doesn’t speak for the rest of the album’s tone. Sun is a definite look into Chan’s personal life and a homage to her journey, but it’s not all bleak. There’s the upbeat display with Ruin and a blatant homage to all the places her career has taken her, as well as the ten minute powerhouse of ‘Nothin’ But Time’. It’s honest, and the six-year gestation period of this record has been well worth the wait.
