What is it about music that you love the most?
Music is extremely powerful, and has a massive hold on a person’s outlook and perspective on life. It’s euphoric, uplifting and profoundly moving.
Which artist dominated your playlists growing up?
Jimi Hendrix! My parents went to a lot of festivals and went wild before I was born, they have excellent music taste. I will always love Hendrix.
Who are the biggest influences on your music today?
At the moment I find myself being really inspired and influenced by eastern music. More specifically eastern European music and middle eastern music. The strings are so very beautiful.
Tell us a little about your LP Rushes and the inspiration behind it.
Rushes is a collection of songs I’ve been cultivating for many years, all of them are deeply personal and relating to specific occurrences in my life. Everything is real, raw and very honest. I can’t play or sing anything that I don’t feel completely to my bones.
What can we expect from your album launch in a couple of weeks?
An intimate and close gathering of spectacular and heartfelt musicians…and me. I tell stories and my performance is very gentle. I like to include my audience in the stories and create a warm environment where everyone feels included. I also like to bring along free treats for everyone to eat, like cupcakes or brownies. I love to indulge all the senses!
Do you have any pre-gig rituals?
I’ve found that having a good light hearted swearing session helps relieve tension. Pants! Balls! Pantaloons! CRAYONS! It gets to the point where you have exhausted all possible profanity and you start making them up. OPRAH!
Who would be your ideal collaborative partner?
I’d absolutely love to do a collaboration with NZ artist Jordan Reyne, and I have a feeling that is a distinct possibility in the near future. We will see, she is a tough lady to pin down. I love her so much, and I feel like if I can make a song with her it would be a dream come true.
Where do you see yourself and your music by the end of the year?
Straight back into recording music! I’ve been writing a lot since being in Australia (I am a kiwi) and I feel so inspired to keep producing music. I would also like to properly honour my songs by creating videos for them. I am on the hunt for video makers to collaborate with, so if anyone reads this and is interested please get in touch via my Facebook page!
What has been your most memorable moment as a musician?
When a follower of my music came to my show with a massive box of flowers, and threw the box of flowers at my feet when I finished my set! That was so beautiful and magical. I’ve had some pretty intense experiences…one gig I had there were five or six girls who were right up the front singing along with me, and drunkenly spilling their drinks on the holdback speakers!
Which artist is on repeat on your playlist this month?
Josh Holmes, one of his Desert Sessions albums. I wish I knew which one it was.
