MICF Reviews – Set List: Stand-up Without A Net

“Asking a comedian to improvise an entire stand up set is like asking a magician to do actual fucking magic.”

The premise for Set List is simple; comedians come up on stage and are given never before seen topics, such as ‘Hijab vs Handjob’, ‘ Passive Aggressive Pimp’, or ‘Spank Bank Bailout’. With nothing but their comedic acumen, the performer has to work with these and try to make the audience laugh.

There’s nothing like watching a good comedian on a roll, joke after joke hitting the spot. But seeing comedians start a sentence, and completely fail to find a joke isn’t as horrifically cringe worthy as it may seem. Rich Hall, a fantastic and experienced comedian missed some beats, but worked with it, and totally pulled it off.

You won’t know who’s performing before you go in, it was a huge pleasure to see Will Anderson, Rich Hall, and Greg Fleet come up to the stage. But don’t let the lack of guarantee of big names scare you off, regardless of comedian you will be in for some laughs.

When you pay to see stand up you’re paying to see well crafted, honed material. It’s sole purpose to make you laugh. This is not Set List. You aren’t watching comedians perform jokes, you’re watching them create jokes. As one of the comedians said, “as long as you’re hilarious, nothing can go wrong.

Set List is showing 9:45 PM Friday 05 April – Sunday 21 April 2013 at Melbourne Town Hall. Tickets are $20
